There is an old saying "The real game is played later in the pub". This dates from before the days of film and video when the most vivid memories of the game, at least on the part of the players, were based on the stories that they told each other as they replayed the game over a tankard or two of ale.
I grew up on a dairy farm in Tasmania and the first football team that I followed was Irishtown in the Circular Head competition. Contrary to my previous report that the Circular Head competition is now defunct, it is still going, although the ranks of local players have been reduced because a Circular Head team plays in the North West Coast competition. The Irishtown club has racked up over 100 years and an attractive book has been written about the history of the club and its leading players and personalities.
